Intimate partner homicide in the United States
  • Between 1,000 – 1,600 women die at the hands of their male partners, annually
  • Women are killed by intimate partners – husbands, lovers, ex-husbands, or ex-lovers – more often than by any other category of killer
  • It is the leading cause of death for African-American women aged 15-45
  • It is the 7th leading cause of death for women overall
  • Intimate partner homicide make up 40-50% of all murders
  • 70-80% of intimate partner homicides, no matter which partner was killed, the man physically abused the woman before the murder
